The school of Sikermaha is situated in a remote village of Kandhamal district. This area is mostly inhabited by tribal peoples and Dalits who are socially, economically and educationally deficient. This area is 100 miles away from the nearest railway station at Berhampur and 20 miles away from the district headquarters.
Almost 85% of the total population is made up of landless day laborers. The women and girls are the most marginalized and disadvantaged section of the society. In this situation the people are unable to educate their children. The girls are especially deprived of any kind of schooling. As they grow, they are asked to work in the fields, looking after the younger ones, grazing cattle and helping the family. Many girls have approached the school to receive some education and get a chance for future employment.
Upon learning of the great need of these young girls, the Sisters of Charity started an education program with 20 girls who attend a tailoring class and receive some non-formal education which will help them to become better mothers and leaders in their own villages.
Since these girls are unable to provide for their maintenance, such as food, clothing and materials for their studies due to their poor family conditions, we decided to sponsor them and others living in the same area.
If you would like to help these poor girls and expand our ability to reach out to more girls who wish to study, please contact us.
